Hluhluwe, in Zululand, is the base of Malandela Safaris. The hunting area in Zululand is extensive. All the ranches in the Hluhluwe are within easy reach of the lodge. Trophies (especially Nyala) are of an exceptional nature. This area is without a doubt unrivaled for trophy Nyala, as in three years I have only had one trophy under 28" and that was twenty seven and three quarters, standard and quality. Some of the areas double as cattle ranches which makes hunting that much more interesting. Other Zululand animals that are plenty full are Impala, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Bushpig and the small ones namely Suni, Red and Grey Duiker and Steenbuck. Hunters and their company are accommodated at Falaza, a luxury Lodge with five star tented accommodation, electricity, shower / toilet en suite. Weather: hot and humid. Early mornings can be chilly.
Accommodation is a lovely and comfortable converted farm house called Watervale. Hunting is easily accessible from the "house". This area is the best site for Bushbuck that I have ever seen (size and availability.) It is also a very good site for non trophy Warthogs from the neighbouring fields where they cause a lot of damage. These are large unfenced bushveld areas. Other animals that can be obtained here are Common Reedbuck, Grey Duiker, Impala plus a limited number of Oribi. Nyala and Kudu are also avaible. Weather: the Natal Midlands is very cold in winter. Summers mild yet cold at night. A raincoat is a must in this area.
Hunters
are based at Penwarn Country Lodge which is in the foot hills of the
Drakensberg. This is the most beautiful of setting for any Safari. A
small Switzerland, all on its own, with African animals. Bird hunting
is also available with water fowl and coarse hunting for pigeons, doves
and guinea fowl. A welcome break from trophy hunting. Most hunting is
done on open grassland with steep valleys. Animals that can be hunted
here are Common Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Grey Rhebuck, Grey Duiker,
Blesbuck, Springbuck, Black Wildebeest as well as Eland at certain times
of the year. Weather: the Drakensberg is a mountainous area therefore
temperatures can reach both extremes with occasional snow falls in winter
- it is a good idea to bring warm clothes. |
